This Fareed Zakaria plagiarism story, sufficiently tweaked, would make a good plot for HBO’s The Newsroom. We’ve had it hammered into our heads that anchor and network face Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is the noblest of assholes, or more accurately, an asshole who’s trying to regain his nobility and maybe once his heart is healed he will be a nice guy again. But while, in the course of the year or so that the show has covered, Will has regained much of his ethical footing, there’s a running gag that he doesn’t write, or even read, or can even find, the blog in his name, and that one of the staffers, Neal (Dev Patel) actually writes all the posts under Will’s name. This is the same Neal who believes in Sasquatch. It might make for a good episode if Neal posted something that plagiarized other work, and then Will had to take the blame for it, or own up to not writing his own blog. It’s an odd thing, anyway, to have a news anchor have his own blog, isn’t it?
