Post with 3 notes
This Please Please Me number was written by Lennon-McCartney (mostly Lennon) as a number for George to sing, so even as early as their first album, the partners were able to come up with strong material for others. AlsoThe song was intended for George because it only has three notes, making it easier for a lesser (at the time) singer like George to handle.
The track, which would become a #2 U.S. hit in 1964 (it wasn’t a single in the UK as Billy J. Kramer already had a hit there with it) is a little unusual with its spoken word introduction of, “You’ll never know how much I really love you/You’ll never know how much I really care.” It’s also a good introduction to George, the song serving to characterize him as a sweet, earnest romantic, the song more boyish than even Paul would typically sing. It’s an easy song to like, a great example of their innocent hand-holding period.
