The Beatles: Song By Song (A Taste of Honey)

An instrumental written by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow for a musical of the same name, The Beatles started playing this one in 1962, based on a vocal version making the rounds that year. It might seem a little weird now for a rock band to cover a song from a musical, but by 1963 even the formerly dangerous Elvis Presley had covered sappy, theatrical material. Pop music is pop music.

Paul takes lead vocal on this one, and really, he’s the only one in the band who would have done the song justice. Basically, it’s a romantic song about the lasting power of one kiss. A nice performance but basically a novelty, as the Beatles would leave this style of song behind almost immediately.
